Gentle Hatha

Private & Group Lessons

All our classes are open to all.  Whether you are a beginner or you've been practising for years it is wise to approach every class as if it were your first, leave your ego at the door and revel in the ‘beginners’ mindset’.

Whilst in class always exercise your ‘yogis choice’, your inner wisdom and honest judgement about whether you are pushing yourself too much and into the realms of ‘ego yoga’.

Please wear loose comfortable layers and be prepared to work in bare feet.  Also ensure that you complete and keep the Health Waiver form updated bringing any health issues to our attention.

Introduction to the Class

Ideal for beginners or those returning to yoga or exercise or those perhaps feeling generally ‘lack lustre’. Classes spend a little more time reinforcing the basics : a) having the joints aligned and synchronising with neighbouring and partner limbs and b) how correct breathing helps organise the harmonious movement of the human anatomy!  Some simple balances, weight bearing exercises and short flowing sequences are included.

  • Gentle Hatha yoga is done for the joy of stretching and stillness of mind, not for calories used
  • Gentle Hatha yoga is done for the joy of teasing the muscles into activity but also moments of calm stillness, calories may be burnt but we hold no expectations and are certainly not counting!
  • A good place to start to explore yoga from which many other flowing and power yoga develop.
  • A good way to unwind and reduce stress, a raised heart rate is optional!
  • No headstands or feats of contortion
  • Classes include standing postures, forward bends, twists, low-impact back bends and easy inversions. Poses may be seated, standing and/or lying down.
  • A variety of props may be used

Hatha yoga is the branch of yoga that concentrates on physical health and mental well-being. Hatha yoga uses bodily postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation (dyana) with the goal of bringing about a sound, healthy body and a clear, peaceful mind.

The roots of yoga are very old and although not a religion, yogic philosophy displays a sympathetic overlap within diverse cultural spiritual practices such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism, Daoism, Sufism and Christianity.

The Hatha yoga practice incorporates exercises for a fit mind (raja yoga) and postures for body (asana), both are achieved through the alchemy of breathing techniques.

With breath-centred movement and relaxation, classes can strengthen, stretch and tone, all of which can help with balance and coordination. They can also help improve sleep quality, mood, energy levels and digestion.

There are nearly 200 hatha yoga postures, with hundreds of variations, which work to make the spine supple and to promote circulation.

With regular practice Hatha yoga promotes total wellbeing of body and mind helping to resolve the stresses of modern life.  In yoga we learn to respond considerately to life’s twists and turns rather than reacting fiercely to every day ups and downs.
