If you're wondering what sort of yoga to try and what the difference is between them, then read on. We've tried hard to make the differences clear, but if you need any help then please do get in touch.

Like anything yoga improves with practice, so why not come along and see what it's all about. Our environment is friendly and supportive. So, whether you're a beginner, returner or you've been practicing for years, our classes are open to all and all are welcome.

'Energy and persistence alter all things' Benjamin Franklin

(pronounced ‘Ha –Ta’)

This is ideal for reasonably fit and mobile beginners or those returning to regular exercise.  Also suitable if you are feeling stiff and 'lack lustre'. Classes  reinforce the foundations of careful and safe alignment with optimum breathing.  Students are encouraged to work honestly within their own current capabilities.

"Do what you can, with what you have, with where you are" Max Strom. 'A Life Worth Breathing'.

Care is given to understanding how to bear weight correctly through the hands and feet.  Expect to see special 'foot treatment' used in every class at Real Me Yoga.  We encourage healthy responsive feet because this aids balance and nurtures healthy joints and spine.  By rolling each foot over a small physio ball for a mini myofascial self-massage in the warm-up we keep supple and strong.  Simple but satisfying standing and floor poses or 'asanas' such as twists, gently held forward,  back and sidebends are mixed with short flowing sequences using 'half' and full versions.  The yoga 'nidra' or relaxation at the close of class is part of embedding the practice and leaves you feeling nicely supple, stretched and revived.

Stretch, relax and restore

A more introspective and quiet session with an extended relaxation element.  Restorative yoga is particularly 'THE' therapeutic for anyone coping with dis-ease, sleep deprivation, anxiety or the stress undoing the strain of life's challenges.  In other words suitable for everyone.  Restorative yoga soothes the body and carefully coaxes us towards stillness in order that we can appreciate how to become less hectic.  A class with fewer poses, but lots of time focussed on each with particular attention on breathing and passive stretching.  You will be propped in each of the prone, supine or seated poses for aproximately 5-8 minutes.  There are no standing poses in this class.  It is recommended for maximum benefit students should invest in their own bolster, eye pillow and blanket for this class and home practice.

Monthly workshops available

HATHA YOGA with flow sequences,  pranayama and relaxation

During this class you’ll find more weight bearing and sequenced poses providing 'all over' attention for the body.  Poses will be a mixture of static and more dynamic 'asanas', postures with the option to extend the complexity according to your own 'yogis choice'.  Students are encouraged to be truthful with themselves about the appropriate effort level.  Attention is paid to incorporating different breathing techniques ‘pranayama’ and 'mudra' or hand gestures whilst in poses. Importance is placed at the end of class in the relaxation 'nidra'.  This is a critical time for the body and mind to absorb or discard cellular memories and internalise the practice.  A variety of props may be used, students are recommended to bring their own bolster, eye pillow & blanket for optimum benefit and to use at home.

Yoga with a chair - Tender Loving Care

Discover how working with chairs as props is no barrier to executing flowing postures or gently increasing the heart rate.  Using chairs (sitting or standing) enables us to be super stable in balances and twists in particular so we are free to explore the physiological details of the poses responding to the breath.  You might think this class is 'too easy' or designed for senior students or the less mobile - think again.  Place your preconceptions under the spotlight, listen to your body and learn how to incorporate yoga with a chair into the modern lifestyle: at the desk, in the car, on the computer or even while you watch TV!

This class uses mats, some props, and chairs.

Transform to peace and happiness.

Jo uses her training and recordings of original texts from Traditional Yoga for these small group sessions.  Learn to release and replace unhelpful thought patterns such as day dreaming, cravings, anxiety, fear, anger, arrogance, self doubt, rumination and regret with dwelling in current reality. Our thoughts frame our experience of living and there is a yoga technique to improve this experience it is called Raja Yoga.

"All that we are is a result of what we have thought.  It is founded on our thoughts, it is made up of our thoughts". Sidharta Guatama , The Buddha.

We can influence every current moment of life to the full if we have the skill to be wholely present. Nothing whatsoever can be done about the past and 'the future' never actually arrives. Meditating on the each and every natural breath provides the mechanism to restore balance and harmonise the mind.

Sessions build gradually to sitting for 10-25 minutes max and provide supporting explanations and material. Why not learn the ancient's traditional workout technique for the brain one that is supported by Neuroscience today and colloquially called mindfulness. Become less involved in the disturbances of OTHER stuff that is beyond our influence and come to enjoy more of the real YOU. The science of exploring the mind at its subtlest level embodies the BIG discovery: Real Me Yoga.
