Hello, I'm Joanna 


Welcome Yogis and Yoginis to Real Me Yoga.


As a yoga practitioner and teacher my purpose is to bring awareness and share all that is good about Hatha and Raja Yoga.


As we age it is vital to retain a strong supple body, a healthy mind and a relaxed demeanour; this, plus many other life benefits, can be achieved through regular yoga practice. My classes offer the perfect, supportive environment in which to move, breathe and find stillness on a regular basis.

When practicing with like-minded people we experience magnified benefits of encouragement, humility, humour, empathy and mindfulness.  The students who attend regularly are my inspiration I only hope my classes return these values and more. ‘’I teach in order to learn, receive and share - my motives for attending classes myself are akin those of my students I hope always to be a student. The constant however is that yoga helps me find my personal context for the reality of now.’’

About Me


My classes invite you to meet me on the neutral territory of ‘the mat’ in whatever mood or mindset you are in, whatever your physical presentation, be ready to make some self-discoveries. The name Real Me Yoga comes from just that.  Our body's are the instrument through which we experience life, to be a stranger to your body is to live a half life. Real Me Yoga seeks to provide you with the environment for you to become truely body-wise and therefore fully alive.

I have been practising yoga since the 1990s, am a graduate of Yoga Campus, London and a member of the British Wheel of Yoga and the Yoga Alliance. In 2016 I qualified to teach Awareness of the Natural Breath or Prana Samyama meditation technique because I wanted to understand the art and science of happiness.  I use my experience and the highly respected and very successful teaching materials provided by Traditional Yoga, which is a UK based charity preserving and teaching the work of Patanjali in the modern era.


The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn the past, not to worry about the future, or to anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and honestly. Buddha


Highly experienced in running mixed classes with a strong closing focus on yoga nidra and relaxation, I also offer restorative & chair yoga sessions.


My teaching encourages students to judge for themselves when it is appropriate to do more or less within safe parameters hence the pace and intensity is very much a personal decision. Breath work however is integral to all yoga and each class includes this to help relieve tensions in the body and mind.


Instruction is clear, precise and multi-sensory and I strongly believe in moving in a way that feels authentic, so exploratory movement within the pose is encouraged.


I engage in an active self development programme of CPD courses with leading teachers such as Roger Cole, Uma Dunsmore-Tull, Melinda Glenister, Judith Kravitz, Liz Lark, Anna Bhushan amongst others. I have attended four 10 day silent Vipassana retreats with Dr Kumar and Traditional Yoga amongst others. I enjoy studying the yoga texts (please see the reading list I enjoy) and use some sanskrit terminology because it is the recognised language for yoga instruction worldwide.  In particular I reflect on and bring into my work the many influences that have contributed to yoga as we know it today.  Classes are therefore gently based around an anatomical as well as a philosophical theme in order to create layers of interest with which students may choose to engage.
